The GeoRipper is a type of trenching attachment that can easily convert your Stihl, Makita, or Husqvarna concrete saw into a mini power trencher. So the backbreaking work of digging a trench with a pick and shovel can be done in a fraction of the time.
The 620 is GeoRipper’s most popular mini-trencher. It provides a fast trenching solution and a lighter digging alternative. Powered by a 61cc engine with a full 4.4 HP for everyday narrow trenching applications. It’s engineered to start easier and vibrate less. It also has innovative features like Stratified Air Scavenging (SAS) that recovers up to 75% of unburned fuel to reduce fuel consumption and a cyclonic air intake that discards larger debris for increased air filter life – and less maintenance. The compact and efficient GeoRipper 620 is an ideal digging solution for irrigation, root barrier, landscape lighting, and other pipe and wire installations requiring 20″ or less digging depth.
The GeoRipper 720 is the world’s first 4-stroke landscape trencher that digs up to 20″ deep. Using a 4-stroke minitrencher provides reassurance, because it is a simplified operation with no more engine failure due to improper fuel mixture. For easier starts, the automatic engine decompression valve is engineered into the cam gear to reduce pull-start force by 40%. The GeoRipper 720 also has lower noise at 92.7dB(A), smoother idle for continuous operation, and lower fuel consumption at only .45 gallons per hour.
Additional advantages include a three-ring piston engineered for improved commercial engine durability, and reduced exhaust and intake carbon build-up for longer cylinder life. In addition, GeoRipper 720 has a five-stage foam-paper-nylon filtration system with Advance Direction Air Flow to provide cleaner air for improved engine durability. The power and performance features of GeoRipper 720 make it a best-in-class handheld trenching tool. Ideal for landscapers, irrigation professionals, electricians and plumbers.
GeoRipper 820 heavy duty gas-powered handheld trencher is meant for the toughest soils. It meets the demand for convenience and performance. GeoRipper 820 digs up to 20″ deep. It delivers with faster starting, more power, and improved fuel efficiency. It has an 81 cc engine with 5.6 HP (maximum horsepower) to take on the most demanding applications. The ignition coil with start-support function stores electrical power with each pull for easier start-ups. It’s engineered for reduced flooding with a carburetor that includes improved deco-valve and metering spring for precise fuel regulation at start up. The GeoRipper 820 also features a SLR muffler that recycles unburned fuel vapor for reduced scavenging-losses and 15% improved consumption.
GeoRipper 827 is our largest mini trencher that comes standard with an EZ Kart. This heavy-duty gas-powered mini trencher is meant for hardpan soils. It meets the demand for convenience and performance. GeoRipper 827 digs up to 27″ deep. It delivers faster starting, more power, and improved fuel efficiency. It has an 81 cc engine with 5.6 HP (maximum horsepower) to take on the most demanding applications. The ignition coil with start-support function stores electrical power with each pull for easier start-ups. The Georipper is as safe to use as any other comparable power tool. With that said, all power equipment can be dangerous if misused. So it’s vital to carefully learn its operation and apply respectful caution while using the tool.
We always advise using face shields, ear protection, work gloves, and safety-toe boots when operating GeoRipper. Additionally, safety-toe boots are particularly recommended for operating the mini trencher in rocky or gravelly soils. Shin guards are also advised. By operating GeoRipper according to safety recommendations, you significantly reduce your risk of injury while trenching.
The mini-trencher will not cut through solid rock or concrete. However, Georipper will dig up loose rocks of roughly the same proportion as a softball. To work through these larger rocks, the user should use a sawing motion. The up and down motion enables your handheld trencher to remove these larger rocks. Otherwise, your mini-trencher easily removes and expels smaller rocks. To save time, avoid large rocks with the trencher and dislodge or break them up with a heavy steel rock bar.
You bet! GeoRipper’s digging chain is specially designed to dig through tree roots up to 3 inches in diameter. However, it’s not meant to be used on roots hanging above the soil. But when encountering roots in the trench, Georipper can get the job done.
Another cool feature is that the teeth are self-sharpening. So you may have to dig for 10-20 minutes in the soil before the teeth can cut through roots. Remember, GeoRipper is not a chainsaw, nor should it be utilized as one. When cutting through large tree roots, patience is required. So you must have patience when cutting through large tree roots. It will take longer than a chainsaw.
As one would expect when digging in rocky ground, GeoRipper may bounce from time to time. Most users report that this is the main thing to pay attention to while trenching. Remember, GeoRipper is not a chainsaw. The tool runs its chain significantly slower than an ordinary chainsaw and has vibration isolation springs in the arm. So the proper use and operation of the mini-trencher will greatly minimize bounce back.
As the digging bar digs through rocky soil, it may bounce upward, generally about 2 to 4 inches above the point of contact. Since most uses require trenches of at least six to eight inches down, at those depths, the nose of the bar will not be able to move above the trench.
Geo ripper comes in different models. When using Georipper as a handheld trencher, you can easily dig 12-14 inches deep. However, the 616, 716, and 816 models can cut a trench with a depth of up to 16 inches. The EZ Kart facilitates digging deeper trenches more easily.
For trenches of up to 20 inches, a GeoRipper 620, 720, or 820 is a better choice. And for digging trenches up to 27 inches deep, choose the 827 models. All GeoRipper 827 models come with EZ Kart as a standard accessory. And when using the 827, it is highly recommended to use the trencher attached to the EZ Kart rather than trenching by hand.
Georipper trenching chains have an average life expectancy of 1,000 linear feet. According to national averages, this simply means that lots of users get less than 1,000 lineal feet, while many others get more.
The factors determining digging chain longevity are digging depth, soil type, and operator knowledge. As with any type of machinery, there is a learning curve, and once the excavator is familiar with trenching with the Georipper, chain longevity may increase. And with all the variables involved in trench depth and soil type, results will differ. However, don’t worry! We provide two chains with each mini-trencher to accommodate the learning process.
Operating a GeoRipper is a learning process, but it does not take long to get accustomed to it. You will just need a little practice with it. The most difficult thing to master is running the GeoRipper at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, where it runs best. Once you’re accustomed to handling the trencher, you’ll find that operating it at less throttle is easier.
But if you remain uncomfortable working with the GeoRipper by hand, you should consider buying the EZ Kart. With the EZ Kart accessory, you don’t have to hold the machine’s weight to operate it, allowing you better leverage.
We are often asked whether chainsaw trencher conversion is possible. There are kits available for certain Husqvarna, Stihl, and Makita demo saws. However, GeoRipper is not compatible with any chainsaw on the market. To learn more, please contact us here.
