If you have heard of Pennsylvania Bluestone and are wondering what it is, here is a guide to help you get a closer look and to see why it is a popular choice for landscaping projects.

What is Pennsylvania Bluestone?

Pennsylvania bluestone is dense, strong, and stable sandstone found in the northeastern United States in Pennsylvania.

This beautiful material was developed more than 360 million years ago. It is a mixture of sand, mica, feldspar, and other minerals.

Since the material does not crack and discolor under extreme weather conditions, these pavers make great material for decks and patios. Plus, they can be cut down to slabs of different sizes, making them suitable for landscape detailing like steps, fireplaces, walls, interior floors, facades, etc.

The amazing color and the unique texture of Pennsylvania bluestone make it immensely popular for landscaping. Its surface is rough enough to not be slippery in the rain, yet it feels soft and smooth to the touch.

What Colors and Textures of Bluestone Pavers Are Available?

Due to the varied distribution and composition of mineral and clay deposits that led to the formation of the Pennsylvania bluestone, they vary nicely in color and texture. Their colors can range from silvery-blue color to other combinations of rust, tan, brown, green, and lilac. You can find Pennsylvania bluestone that comes in a mix of all these different shades.

When it comes to the texture of Pennsylvania bluestone pavers, you can choose from two types – natural cleft and thermal finish. Natural cleft has a natural look and has an imperfect surface. These are created when bluestone was sawn out and then split on visible seams. On the other hand, thermal finish bluestones are flamed to provide it with a smooth finish.

What Size and Patterns are Available?

Pennsylvania bluestone comes in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes. They can be cut into uniform sizes like squares and rectangles, or they can be cut in irregular shapes and used to give a more natural look with rough edges.

So, the size and pattern you will want to use for your landscaping project will depend on the overall concept and your preferences. Irregular-sized bluestone is perfect for walkways, water features, garden paths, and stepping stones. Uniform pieces are easier to work with and require less work to cover a large area such as backyard patios, swimming pools, fire features, etc.

What is the Best Way to Clean Pennsylvania Bluestone?

Pennsylvania bluestone can be cleaned using a soft scrub brush and water. Lemon diluted in water or vinegar can help get rid of tougher stains. You might even want to power wash them once every few years to help maintain their color. To prevent the appearance of a white substance on the bluestone after a few years, make sure your contractor uses quality additives in the mortar for preventative measures.

Does Bluestone Need to be Sealed?

While some maintain that it’s not necessary to seal bluestone to protect it, we still recommend sealing it. Pennsylvania Bluestone is a porous stone and a member of the sandstone family. As such, it can be subject to slight discoloration and wearing from foot traffic over time. However, simply applying sealer just as you would with any other quality paver will help it keep its luster and beauty for a lifetime. In addition, if you use grout between your pavers the sealer is necessary to protect it.

How Much Does Pennsylvania Bluestone Cost?

Several factors can affect the price of the Pennsylvania bluestone, such as the cut, the area where you live, the thickness, and whether you need any special fabrication
